Party on the Patio! 2022 Latest Outdoor Trends

With the weather warming up and friends and family get-togethers in fully swing, the call of outdoor entertaining is beckoning once more.

When it comes to entertaining, it all starts with making your guests feel comfortable. And that starts with the seating area. How’s your gathering spot looking these days? If you’re feeling like your old backyard furnishings could use some major updating, the HT team has you covered. Our editors have pulled together some great patio sets to help make your outdoor space the envy of the block. So regardless of whether your yard space is a cozy three person hangout, all the way up to the maximum of 10, a little investment goes a long way.

Here’s a few we really like, with quality you’ll really like too…

COZY COMFORT FOR 3 to 4

Just because space is at a premium in your small, slab patio doesn’t mean you should resign yourself to folding chairs or plastic stackers. Invest in some great, high quality pieces that don’t take up a ton of space. This Acadia wood and fire pit set from Christopher Knight has four, slim-profile seats that can be easily moved around to maximize your space. Counter the light wood and white cushions with some dark throw pillows, like these from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams. The minimal patterns lend an immediate cool mod vibe to keep your neutrals from going too bland. Keep your real estate organized and clean with an indoor/outdoor bar cart like this one from Best Choice. String lights will give your guests plenty of ambiance, especially with this silvery Marrakesh-inspired set from Allsop (bonus – they’re solar, so no need to go hunting for an extension cord). And if you truly want to set your patio space apart, skip the area rug entirely and lay down a set of composite outdoor tiles to create the look of a weathered, grayed oak deck (they snap together easily, so zero tools required).

Another great way to get big returns in your small space? Turn your intimate space into a lush botanical retreat. Dark woody browns and greens marry well with a few bright pops of turquoise and reds. This set by Threshold gives you plenty of maneuvering options if your space doesn’t have enough room for a full sofa, or maybe the layout isn’t an easy fit. The all-weather wicker looks lux but is super easy to clean, and resists fading. Two glazed ceramic cubes from Seasonal Living serve double-duty as side tables or extra seating. The plush outdoor Banana Rug anchors the space in greenery, and echoed by a 54″ Caladium Plant and a playful outdoor pillow. The last piece to bring this look altogether? A nice pop of red and gold from Arik Levy’s outdoor pendant collection.

LUX FUN FOR 4 TO 6

Craving a modern-meets-casual chic? Then west coast Desert Modernism is what you need. Think Palm Springs style – organic, a little boho with a touch of swank. Focus on the trifecta of tonal gray mixes with natural wood tones and some brass elements. We start with the king of all outdoor wood – Teak. This gorgeous outdoor teak sofa and swivel chair combo from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams are quality investment pieces that will maintain their beauty for a lifetime. We bring in concrete elements with two slab tables that can be placed together for a fluid look, or separated and moved around easily on their casters (which can be locked for safety). A textured concrete side table with brazil wood top and a tribal-boho inspired rug in a neutral gray help ground the ‘room’ while adding textural interest. Our final touches of brass add warm, lux elements in the form of Brightech’s patio lights and Jonathan Adler’s eclectic Muse D’or candle, providing the perfect focal points for your guests to experience your amazing space.

One of the newest trends on the scene is 70s reinvented. Metal mesh woven into streamlined shapes update and modernize this look to keep it from going to retro. Neutral organics and color pops add to freshen the look, as we did here with Blu Dot’s Hot Mesh settee and lounge chairs. On either side are Jaimie Young’s chunky, hand-fired ceramic side tables, dressed up in a cool Mediterranean blue and dead center is Bend Good’s drum table reimagined in bright teal. All that metal deserves plenty of cozy pillows. We chose a combination of colorful rectangular pillows (that echo the teal and blue beautifully) and grounding neutrals from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams and Opalhouse. Tying the neutrals to black with Lulu & Georgia’s jute colored rug brings it all together with only the lighting element left. For this, we went with a playful nod to the 70s vibe with a three pendant string light from Pablo Studios.

OUTDOOR ZEN FOR 8 TO 10

Big gatherings can sometimes lead guests to feel a little isolated. Take a cue from wine country and work with cozy natural tones with plenty of fun lighting to define your space. This circular patio lounge set gives you the best of both worlds, as each section can be separated and spaced out to your satisfaction, while the curved edges give the atmosphere of still being in a close, comfortable group. Underneath, and ornate braided outdoor rug is large enough to cover the space. As for lighting, a 42″ lighted column from Smart & Green adds some cool technology, juxtaposed against a rustic table lantern (solar LED so no worries if it tips over) and Vintiquewise’s homey, rope-handled tray.

If you have a large enough yard to host a big group, chances are you have a pool. So if your cabana area is ground zero for most of your parties, make the most of your space and give it a true spa hotel vibe. That starts with some really great loungers. Once again, we turn to Teak. This Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams teak chaise is so much more luxurious than any squeaky metal recliner and will last a lifetime. For seating, we turn to Polywood’s collection of seating sets for six and four. Together every guest should have a fantastic seat as the fun begins. Keeping things cool, we added a 9′ round Cabana striped umbrella, which fits with our theme, along with a cute little striped lumbar pillow for our chaise. Adding a much needed touch of green, we grab Peyton Lane’s waterproof topiary (at only $433 a piece you could grab a bunch!). And as the sun begins to dim, let your coffee table pull double duty with Artkalia’s LED coffee table. Drinks all around!
