Kitchen rugs have had a bad rap. Somewhere around the early aughts, a revolution of sorts began where rugs in the kitchen were verboten. The sole exception was limited to utilitarian pieces, meant to help relieve the dreaded “foot fatigue” of standing on the hard surfaces of your kitchen floor. Apparently the idea really caught on, so much so you would think we’d have cured Plantar Fasciitis by now. Suddenly, if it wasn’t made from foam, vinyl or injected with some sort of gel material, it wasn’t supposed to go in the kitchen.
Fast-forward to now, and the return of the kitchen rug. But we’re not just talking a single piece. Designers are using a combo of runners by the fridge area with matching companion by the sink, or vice versa depending on how your kitchen is laid out. They can be twinsie patterns (different sizes of the same rug) or complementary friendlies. The trick is to use a rug that can handle water and the occasional stain. Today’s indoor/outdoor rugs are perfect for this task. They come in so many variations you’re sure to find one (or two in this case) that’s just what your kitchen decor is craving. Oh, and because we are dealing with rug placements over hard, flat surfaces below, a good rug gripper is a wise choice. You could even add a squishy rug pad so you can have your ‘foot fatigue’ cake and stylishly eat it too.
